The main and unique characteristic of Solar RC Blimps is that the flight autonomy is incomparable to any other craft. Simply explained the volume of the Blimp is calculated to annul the Blimp weight including envelope, electronics, stabilizers, solar cells, batteries, all rest Blimp related and target payload. The result is a fully set Blimp, ready to fly, that is positively buoyant. All the available energy is than used only for motion with minimum losses (mainly on aerodynamic resistance of the envelope). There is no need to use energy to lift payload, components or else as they have “no weight”. A fully set and loaded Blimp will float consuming no energy at all. That is unique to Blimps! Today flexible solar cells with 20%+ conversion efficiency are giving more energy than the Blimp needs for motion and rest electronic onboard consumers. To take advantage of the two above facts the design of the Solar RC Blimp also had to be ground breaking and innovative. Classic Blimp designs with double turn able main motors are great for maneuverability but are adding too much drag on the low part of the Blimp. In the same time the nose (front) of the Blimp is cutting through air making it extremely aerodynamically resistant (see graphic below). So the results are 2 main aerodynamic resistant areas of the Blimp. With that fact in mind we had to redesign the classic Blimp concept. The obvious place for the main propulsion was at the nose (front) of the Blimp.
